Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's included in the price?

All transportation at our destination, motel fees, park entry fees, meals starting with lunch day 1 through lunch on the last day. The price for each trip is based on gasoline prices at the deadline point. If prices spike, as they have done in the past, I may have to add a surcharge at the time of the trip.

Q: What do I have to provide?
You will make your own reservations, pay for airfare, and arrange and pay for transportation to and from your airport of origin. Participants often arrange to share rides and parking fees. You provide camping equipment and your own snacks. Participants sometimes decide to go out to dinner as a group, at their personal expense. See Equipment Lists for specific trips for details.

Q. How many people do you take on each trip?
There is a minimum of 6, a maximum of 8.

Q: What age range do you recommend?
Most of our trips are appropriate for all ages over 14.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?
We require a 50% deposit by check or in cash 6 weeks before the trip departure date. If at this point, we haven’t met the minimum number of 6 participants, we will refund your deposit in full. We ask for full payment 30 days before departure. I’m sorry to say that all other payments are nonrefundable, as we calculate the trip price based on the number of participants. There are no refunds for guests who arrive late or depart early from the trip. If we have to cancel a trip for other reasons, of course, we’ll refund all of your money.

Q: Do you ever cancel trips due to weather?
Trips go rain or shine. However, we reserve the right to change the trip itinerary due to weather and other conditions beyond our control...We only do this with your safety in mind.

Q: What will the weather to be like?
The weather in and around the canyons can change at any time. The elevation in the Southwest can range
from 2000 ft to over 9000 ft, so we can get any kind of weather. You’ll need to plan for warm and cold in
spring and fall. Click here for a full equipment list.

Q: What do I need to bring on the trip?
Click Here for a document that will explain everything that you will need for your trip.

Q: What kind footwear do I need?

This can vary. Hiking boots or sneakers are fine. For Escalante and Big Bend, you will be hiking in water, so
you’ll want shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Some folks carry a pair of sandals for stream crossings.

Q: Do I need to bring my own snacks?
No, unless there are items that you really want. Also, if you have an unusual dietary restriction, talk to me.
You may want to bring some of your own snacks.

1Q: What if I have dietary restrictions?

Please let me know what they are. We will try to accommodate them if they are not too extreme.
Make sure to let me know if you have an food allergies.

Q: Do cell phones work in these areas?
In some places, yes. In many others, no.

Q: Can I be contacted in case of an emergency?

Again, sometimes yes, and sometimes there will be a delay until we reach cell phone service.

Q: Do I have to have camping experience?
No, but you should make sure in advance that you know how to put up your tent and have what you need to do it.

Q: Do you offer customized trips?
Yes, ask me! For example, I’ve taken a group of artists to Bisbee, AZ, on a non-camping trip.
