THE TRIP

Chihuahuan Desert in Big Bend National Park, Texas straddles the border of the United States and Mexico and is the most southern of the North American deserts. It’s a dry desert compared to the others, but like them, it contains dramatic geology, strikingly different habitats, and fascinating animal and plant life. Where isolated mountain ranges wring water from the clouds or where rivers, natural wells or collecting basins occur, animal life is abundant and canyon walls can be green with orchids. As in the other deserts, there are spectacular wildflower shows if winter rains occur at the right time.

Big Bend National Park is said to be three parks in one: river, desert, and mountains. The Rio Grande River, a long, green oasis, runs for 107 miles along the southern boundary of the park, while the Chisos Mountains rise from the desert floor into forests of ponderosa pine at almost 8000 feet.

The park is a transition zone between north and south, east and west, and so is rich in species. There are more than 1,200 species of plants, 11 species of amphibians, 56 species of reptiles, 40 species of fish, 75 species of mammals, 450 species of birds, and about 3,600 species of insects in the park. In fact, there are more types of birds, bats, and cacti than in any other national park in the United States.
